Water Chestnut infestation
On August 22nd, a volunteer surveyor from Cobbossee Lake Association (CLA) found a suspicious plant that Watershed Friends' staff, the Maine DEP, and Lake Stewards of Maine (LSM) all confirmed to be Water Chestnut (Trapa natans). Following that find, a rapid response survey was conducted by WF with assistance from the DEP and CLA staff and volunteers. Three Water Chestnut plants were found in Jug Stream, south of the dam, and subsequently removed by our Plant Control Coordinator. No other plants were found on either the Annabessacook Lake or Cobbossee Lake sides of the dam.
This is the first known Water Chestnut infestation in the state of Maine. Please read the attached press release for additional information.

Eagle Nest Update: July 2019
The eagles began occupying an osprey nest near Coles Cabin in the winter of 2018. One osprey returned alone and upon finding the eagles squatting in the nest, he/she spent the next four days dive bombing the eagles and screaming at them in an attempt to evict them from the nest. The eagles resisted and held fast to their new found home. When the osprey’s mate finally arrived, the war had already been lost and the osprey moved down the pond to make a new nest, leaving the eagles the victors. ...for complete story click here Video of osprey attacking eagles to reclaim nest in April of 2018. |
